Dear friends!
We want to help 73-year-old lady Niina, who lives in Kiikla, Ida-Virumaa, in a three-story Soviet-era panel building.
At the end of last year, Annika, the chairwoman of the apartment association, reached out to us for help, deeply concerned about the elderly lady’s situation. Niina’s apartment windows and doors are completely worn out and need to be replaced. Unfortunately, we could not immediately start the project and help Niina, as there were many people in need at that time, and we are doing all of this alongside our regular jobs.
At the beginning of summer, we visited Kiikla to assess the situation firsthand. The problem is indeed severe. The elderly lady has patched up the balcony door on her own and nailed a piece of plywood in place, because the door glass fell out and shattered. The doors, windows, and window sills are in such poor condition that they barely hold up. They let in cold and moisture as if they were made of paper.
Considering the circumstances, including the fact that the elderly lady recently underwent breast cancer surgery and buried her husband and son (only her daughter and cat remain), she remains positive and says she would be happy just to have a strip over the window to keep the water out. “If the window sills were a little wider, I could place some flowers there,” she says, adding with a laugh that maybe even the cat could find a small spot on the sill.
We asked Niina if she had contacted the local government and what their response was. “Well, they came here at the end of last year, looked around, and promised to help,” Niina says. “Unfortunately, there have been no answers so far.” In the spring, we also communicated with the local municipality government, and they acknowledged the problem but unfortunately lacked the resources.
Our Naerata Ometi team has also spoken with some other local government leaders, and we must admit that the problem is serious. The further from the capital, the poorer the municipalities. Unfortunately, that is the case.
We have sent inquiries to some companies and explored our options. On average, doors cost about 1000 euros, and windows 350 to 400 euros. Window sills cost around 70 to 100 euros.
Dear donators and companies! We are reaching out to you for help. Let’s all work together to help the elderly lady by installing new balcony doors, windows, and window sills. To do this, we need to raise about 1800 euros.
Perhaps there is a company that produces doors and windows willing to donate a door, windows, and window sills to us? We found two men from Viljandi who are willing to come and help us install the doors and windows for free.
Many thanks to everyone in advance. Together we can achieve more.
