Help Ruudi: A Boy Fighting Leukemia Needs a Toilet and Shower at Home

Dear Friends,

In Harju County lives a very friendly and cheerful eight-year-old boy named Ruudi, who has been battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia for the third year now. Over the past three years, Ruudi and his mother have spent their time in various hospitals across Estonia.

Today, they have reached a stage in treatment where Ruudi has undergone a bone marrow transplant — fortunately, thanks to dedicated doctors and donors, the situation currently seems to be under control. However, the future is always uncertain. They live one day at a time. Ruudi still cannot eat or drink everything he might desire — tap water remains strictly forbidden for him.

Due to Ruudi’s health condition, the family is forced to build washing facilities in a small under-the-stairs space. They live in a small house built during the First Republic of Estonia, where a dry toilet was still in use. All other renovation work has already been done by the father with his own hands. The local municipality and the TV3 Inglite Liit (through donations from the show “Inglite Aeg”) have also lent a helping hand – thanks to them, all the necessary materials for building a bathroom are now available. An electrician has just been found too, who will help bring light into the room.

In addition to building the washing facilities, the family is also required to connect to the city’s water and sewage system, which costs about €3,000.

The old sewage well and pipeline are completely worn out, renovation is not an option, and the Environmental Board no longer permits their use.
